Pick Your Style of Fence
Fencing Basics:
- Before looking at which fence you might want, we need to start with the basics 1st.
- We don’t shop the big box stores for wood because their quality isn’t exactly the best.
- We only shop at McCoy’s, and this is why. When was the last time that you saw one of the big box stores pulled up in front of an empty lot with a truckload of lumber to build a house? When was the last time that you saw an empty lot with a
- McCoy’s truck parked out front ready to unload? When it comes to building a custom house, builders aren’t going to skimp on materials that will fail. They buy from McCoy’s!!! This is why we shop at McCoy’s.
- We start by setting every 4 x 4 x 8 post 2 feet deep in a 10 to 12-inch round hole.
- If you are having a company dig your fence holes with a manual post hole digger, I will show you a small shallow hole that won’t stand up against a hurricane.
- Next, we add 80 lbs. of concrete to every post hole for good holding power.
- We use a 3-rail system that will stretch across (3) 4 x 4 posts, and they are staggered to give you a solid wall that will hold up under harsh winds. Putting 2 x 4s in between your post will give you a weak fence.
- Then we add a rot board across the bottom which serves two reasons: A) to keep strong animals out of your yard, And B) to keep your pickets out of the water because they will rot a lot faster than the rot board, plus it gives you extra height so no one can see over your fence.
- And: we only use Hot Dipped Galvanized Ring shank nails---why? A) Hot-dipped galvanized nails will not rust, and B) the rings on the ring shank nails will not turn loose after being installed which means that your fence picket won’t fall off down the road.
Customized Privacy Fences:
- For starters, there are two types of cedar: a good grade of cedar that still has the resin in it for longevity or you can go with the cheap cedar that has been kiln dried and won’t last as long.
- Pine Pickets: In the pine picket department, you can get a really nice ¾ thick picket that is literally a 2 x 6 cut in half, or you can get the cheaper thinner version that won’t last as long.
- We can add a Pine or Cedar trim board either at the top of the fence or right down the middle.
- We can add a Pine 2 x 6 cap board, or we can add a Cedar Cap. Don’t let anyone talk you into using a Douglas fir cap, it will only last for about 5-years before it starts to fall apart.
- We can add 1 x 2 Cedar trim boards vertically over the cracks where the pickets meet for an awesome look.
- Or, if you want an extra strong fence we can add 4 x 6 post instead of the standard 4 x 4 post.
- Instead of the standard 4 x 4 post, we can use 2-3/8” metal post.
- Even the rot board can make a difference in aesthetics. We prefer to use a 2 x 6 rot board but a 5/4 deck board with rounded edges looks pretty awesome.
- Basically, anything that you would like to do to give you a customized fence we can do including stains and painting.
Horizontal Wood Fences:
- There are a lot of options when it comes to vertical fences. Any fence that you may want needs to start with the best wood from McCoy’s.
- When building a Horizontal fence, the spacing of the post can play a major role in how that fence will look years down the road. Keeping the 4 x 4 posts at 6-foot apart is the best for building these fences, but we can put them on 8-foot spacing if you want, but it is not recommended.
- We can build a straight vertical wall, a woven wall to allow wind to flow through, or a louver wall which aesthetically is a lot nicer looking fence that uses 5/4 decking boards.
2, 3, or 4-Rail Ranch-Style Fences:
- Before you consider building a ranch-style fence, you need to know some facts. Using round posts will warp your boards over time, and you won’t be happy with your fence in a few years.
- We insist on using square posts for our fences because we want you to be happy with your fence for many years to come.
- Secondly, we set every post roughly 2 feet deep with 80 lbs. of concrete per post.
- Don’t let anyone space your post out more than 8 feet because your boards will start to sag. Setting your post on 7-foot centers would even be better.
- Most people want a wire mesh material of some form to keep animals either in or out. So, if you have animals, we need to discuss which size material will suit your needs the best.
- Our 2-rail system with the 2 x 6 at the top and a 2 x 6 at the bottom with the Black vinyl chain link fabric is a really popular option.
- Now, it doesn’t matter which style of fence you may want; we can add takeaway rails to fit your budget.
Beach Style fences:
- These fences are designed to let high wind, and, at times, water pass right through them.
- Any ranch-style fence will work great out there, but there are also rolls of picketed wire that can be installed fairly quickly and it is reasonably priced just to mark your territory and to keep people from walking across your property.
Chain link fences:
- For starters which kind of Chain link fence are you looking for? A decorative Black vinyl chain link fence or an old-fashioned Galvanized fence? Is this for residential or commercial use?
- Our end and corner posts are all set 2 feet deep with 80 lbs. of concrete.
- Our Line post is set 2 feet deep with 80 lbs. of concrete per post.
- The chain link fabric can range from 12.5-gauge to 9-gauge wire. 12.5 is a thin wire, 9-gauge is a thick wire. The prices range from one to another. We prefer the 11-gauge because it is reasonably priced and will last a really long time.
Cattle, Sheep, Goats, or Chickens:
- If you need farm fencing of any kind, we have the wire for you.
- We can build chicken coops, pole barns for winter, or shade sheds for your animals to get out of the blistering sun. And yes, we will use a compass to ensure north winds and westerly sunshine will not bother your animals.
- Or we can just run acres of wire for Cattle or Goats.
